Many suggested to come early as many foods tend to be sold out by 11 a.m., so I went to the market around 7:30 a.m. David and I took a taxi to get there since we were not so sure where it is located at. I have to say that it was indeed an excellent decision. Though it was considerably close to the apartment we stayed in, the journey was quite complex.
Frankly speaking, the market was smaller than I thought it would be. But it was considerably clean compared to some traditional markets in Jakarta!
Without further ado, here are some stalls that we visited at Imbi Market:
Ah Weng Koh Hainan Tea
It was packed with an obvious reason. I had their traditional homemade Kaya Toast as well as their authentic Teh Tarik. The Teh Tarik was outstanding, but the Kaya Toast was beyond words! The kaya spread was rich and the butter in between the toast melted right away inside the mouth.. I start drooling just by thinking about it! Definitely try this if you get the chance to drop by at Imbi Market!
Ah Fook Chee Cheong Fun
As its name says, their main offering was Cheong Fun. There was quite a long queue at this stall and I was curious of the taste of their traditional Cheong Fun, so I decided to get in line. Aside from Cheong Fun, they also served fish balls, tofu, and other traditional snacks. I decided to order their specialty - Cheong Fun. It differs from the ones I usually eat. It was topped with this rich and thick sweet spicy paste, and sprinkled with sesame seed. It was superb!
The scent of fresh, mouthwatering pastries from this stall can be smelled from a distant. The smell was so tempting and irresistible that decided to go over to the stall right away. Like immediately. Its table was filled with appetizing pastries that were hot and fresh from the oven! They served a variety of egg tart flavors including original, green tea, sesame, and even more! I opted to try their original egg tart. It was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S! The crust was crunchy and the filling was smooth, rich and sweet! It is plainly one of the finest egg tarts I've ever tried so far! To top it off, the owner and the staff of the stall were very friendly and humble.
Those are all the foods we tried at Imbi Market! Everything was amazingly delicious as well as appetizing, and I would love to come back to try more foods from other stalls. However, one important thing that should be kept in mind is to NEVER take photographs without the permission of the stall owner. Some owners would be totally upset and offended if you take photos of their stall or food without their permission. Another thing to remember is that each stall has its own sitting area. You should NOT simply sit anywhere, but to sit within the sitting area of the stall that you bought your food from. So that simply means: No Food, No Seat.
So we've reached the end of this post. Altogether, it was an incredible experience for me to be able to try many authentic food from a traditional market in a foreign country!
